There is something very sexy about a girl wearing her boyfriend’s shirt or for some her husband’s shirt or for some simply just wearing a man’s shirt!! If you don’t fall under any category, it’s simply just stealing from your dad, which I did, well not his shirt but his sturdy rugged brown leather Titan Octane chronograph Quartz.Fascinated by hard steel even before the trend came in. Wearing a statement watch on my tiny wrist made me feel more powerful not in a manly sort of way, but breaking norms and not caring what one might think. Be it the boyish blazer, the varsity jacket, the black suit, slouchy trousers, sturdy watch, men’s brawny eau de parfum, we just can’t resist but borrow from the opposite sex!!.
That being said, we women certainly do have the ability to add that certain soft feminine factor to these traditionally testosterone fueled garbs and make it our own. Women just wear things better. Anything and Everything . Women have the genuine intuition for how pieces should fit and what fits them best. Through the decades of fashion women have added a sense of soft gravitas to this manly ensemble. Dianne Keaton made Annie Hall synonymous with the words “Style Icon”. A vest on any other woman with a pair of khakis could have easily swung for a Ranger in the Forest department !,but not for Keaton. Her confidence that’s in no way related to arrogance but rather, self-acceptance of one’s weird things and flaws. She made pants suits a fashionable style choice as opposed to the following: some kind of rebellion; a failure to adhere to red carpet standards; a “borrowed from the guys” sentiment; a statement. She wears suits rather than suits wear her.The classic Katharine Hepburn made masculine fashion chic even as girlier styles came in and out of fashion, for a large portion of the 20th century, she stuck to wide-leg trousers,menswear-inspired shirts and comfortable shoes , Throughout her life, she wore the pants!! and who can ignore,70s musician Patti Smith, who added a little rock and roll spunk to the mix. In more recent times Singer Janelle Monae gives the Bow Tie an edgy feminine factor. Rarely leaving home without her trademark satin bow tie , she wears it EVERYWHERE!! When Penelope Cruz appeared on the red carpet at the International Rome Film Festival, she wore a simple menswear outfit. The gorgeous star wore a simple tailored black suit with a tuxedo shirt underneath.!! And who can ignore Tilda Swinton who makes menswear look awesome in real life. Simple sharpness and boldness of power , Individuals who dare to risk-Strong yet Soft, Bold yet Beautiful, Fierce yet Feminine.
A question that always hovers over my head is that movies, magazines media glamorize women in her boyfriend's, oversized shirt . The irony though, when we go shopping we strive so hard to find that perfect fit, that perfect size, that perfect length but when it comes to wearing slouchy oversized boyfriend clothes it is deemed sexy?? Does get you thinking, right. A little honesty here, wearing oversized clothes does make you look like a slob. I know it, you know it and the people flogging you the clothes and the images certainly know it too. But yet we seem to adhere and be drawn to that sloppy, beguiling, comfortable manly shirt!!.
Men’s style is easy and Women is frou-frou, so I’ve heard, have you wondered why it seems so much easier for them to get dressed in the morning. Few key pieces in their wardrobe -Maximum impact with minimum garments. BUT AGAIN, we are women!! I don’t want to get ready in a jiffy and throw on anything from my wardrobe that my hands get.I love tending to myself, I love going that extra mile, I love being beautiful , that’s the best part of being a women! In the end I think It's not about being one of the guys (unless you want to be). It's about using a menswear sensibility to make sure your style is perfectly tailored for you.
On a little personal note, I’m sure most of us have borrowed from the guys. Lying to our self as we might be, proclaiming its for fashion but secretly attaching sentimental value rather than fashion. I always wondered when things get sour what happens to our collection of ‘borrowed from the guys’, burn them, throw them, garage sale, return them, goodwill donation?? Some pieces are so extravagant that no amount of bitterness, sourness , squabble or rift would make me return that genuine American leather slipper(which is four sizes bigger then my feet!!) ,that oversized ridiculous shirt, that insane No.13 jersey!!
Simple sharpness and the boldness of power . Borrowed from the guys denotes breaking rules. Feisty Hollywood legends made it their own, Celebrated Artists made it their own, Women who dared to be different made it their own. Take a swing at it and make ‘borrowed from the guys’ your own ; wearing a boyish blazer over a girly frock or a floral skirt, precision tailored manly pants with pencil heels, Sturdy watch with a shift dress and a cute tote, A cummerbund over a delicate lace to accentuate your waist . We, women have the genuine intuition for how pieces should fit,we mix and match, we add that spunk .We just wear things better!! even if it’s ‘Borrowed From The Guys’!!..
